The complete Bangkok base + three side-trips: Ayutthaya UNESCO, Kanchanaburi (River Kwai) and optional Hua Hin.
Ten days is Bangkok as a base rather than Bangkok as a destination. You use the city as a hub â with all the temples, markets, cooking classes and rooftops of a 7-day plan â and add three regional side-trips that would each be a headliner elsewhere: Ayutthaya (UNESCO ancient capital), Kanchanaburi (Bridge over River Kwai and Erawan seven-tier waterfalls), and an optional Hua Hin overnight for the beach. This is the plan for career-break travellers, honeymooners with time, and slow-tourism families. If you have 10 days but hate long day trips, you can still use the extras as rest-days by turning one into a spa retreat and another into an Iconsiam-plus-Chatuchak double.
The transport strategy stretches beyond BTS and MRT. In-city days use a Rabbit card + MRT stored-value combo. Ayutthaya is the āļŋ20 third-class train from Hua Lamphong or āļŋ245 second-class. Kanchanaburi is a 2.5-hour minivan from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal or the more atmospheric ThonburiâNam Tok train (see /bangkok-to-kanchanaburi). Hua Hin is the 2.5-hour SRT rail line from Bangkok â see /bangkok-to-hua-hin. Book Kanchanaburi accommodation ahead in NovemberâFebruary and pre-book Erawan waterfalls (last entry 3 PM) for the same-day trip pattern to work.
Time the 10 days for late November to early March. Loy Krathong (November full moon) is unmissable on the Chao Phraya (see /bangkok-in-november). December brings NYE fireworks and cool 22â30°C weather (see /bangkok-in-december). Avoid April 13â15 (Songkran closures â see /bangkok-in-april) unless you specifically want the water fight. Kanchanaburi is best in the dry cool season; Erawan falls run all year but the pools are prettier in the rainy tail. Read /what-to-pack (waterproof phone case for Erawan, temple dress code, mosquito repellent for Kanchanaburi), /safety-tips (gem-shop scam still runs) and /rainy-season if you're travelling JuneâOctober.
Career-break travellers, retirees, multi-generation families, honeymooners with time, and anyone whose long-haul flight demands 10+ days on the ground.
Too static if you want to combine Bangkok with Chiang Mai + islands â split it 5+3+5 instead. Also overkill if you don't enjoy day trips.
Backpacker āļŋ1,500/day (add āļŋ1,200 Kanchanaburi overnight); mid-range āļŋ4,500/day (add āļŋ3,500â5,000 Kanchanaburi + Hua Hin); luxury āļŋ14,000+/day (private car, guides, Six Senses or Chiva-Som Hua Hin adds āļŋ15,000+).
Rabbit + MRT stored-value for Bangkok days; SRT tickets bought at Hua Lamphong (or online at railway.co.th) for Ayutthaya and Hua Hin; private van (~āļŋ3,500/day) or shared minivan (~āļŋ180) for Kanchanaburi. A Chao Phraya Tourist Boat 1-day pass is worth it on your Old City and river-dinner days.
