Health, travel & vehicle insurance — essential coverage for living in or visiting Bangkok

    8 min readUpdated 2026-06

    Insurance for Foreigners in Thailand

Health insurance is arguably the single most important purchase you will make as a foreigner living in or visiting Thailand. While Bangkok's hospitals are world-renowned for quality and affordability compared to the West, costs can still add up quickly without coverage. A routine outpatient visit at Bumrungrad or Samitivej can run 3,000-8,000 THB, and a hospital stay with surgery can easily reach 200,000-500,000 THB or more. The good news is that Thailand offers an exceptionally wide range of insurance options — from international plans by companies like BUPA, Cigna, and Allianz that cover you worldwide, to local Thai insurers like Muang Thai, Bangkok Insurance, and Thai Health Insurance that offer comprehensive coverage at significantly lower premiums.

The key difference between international and local plans is hospital network and claims processing. International plans typically allow direct billing at all major private hospitals in Bangkok — Bumrungrad, BNH, Samitivej, Medpark, and Bangkok Hospital all have dedicated insurance desks that handle cashless claims. Local Thai plans may have more restricted networks but often cost 40-60 percent less for comparable coverage levels. For expats on a budget, a local Thai health plan costing 15,000-30,000 THB per year can cover inpatient care at quality hospitals that most Westerners would find perfectly acceptable. If you ride a motorbike (and many expats do), make sure your health policy does not exclude motorcycle accidents — this is the most common exclusion that catches people off guard.

Beyond health coverage, there are several other insurance types worth considering. Travel insurance is essential for short-term visitors and is now required for certain visa categories. Car and motorbike insurance comes in three tiers in Thailand — compulsory Por Ror Bor (third-party liability, about 600-1,000 THB per year), voluntary third-party coverage, and comprehensive first-class insurance. Condo insurance is affordable at around 2,000-5,000 THB per year and covers fire, flooding, and theft — particularly worthwhile given Bangkok's occasional flooding during heavy monsoon rains. For digital nomads and remote workers, specialized plans from companies like SafetyWing and World Nomads bridge the gap between travel insurance and full expat health coverage, offering monthly subscriptions starting around 40-80 USD.
